After two years in politics as a professor, Bernie Sanders became the first independent since 1950 to be elected to the United States House of Representatives. He held this position until 2007, when he was elected to the Senate, after a caucus with the Democratic Party. He was endorsed by many political heavyweights such as Senator Barack Obama at the time.
On April 30, 2015, he announced his intention to run for US president under the banner of the Democratic Party.
