On October 8, 1943 in Lower Manhattan, New York, Cornelius Crane Chase was born; the name “Chevy” was a nickname given to him by his grandmother when he was 2 years old. Chase hailed from a very well-to-do family in New York City, with a rich lineage dating back to 1624. His father, Edward Tinsley Chase, was a famous Manhattan magazine editor and writer, while his mother, Cathalene Parker (née Browning ), had father was a Crane Company heir made a name for himself as a concert pianist and librettist.

Unfortunately, Chase’s parents divorced when he was just 4 years old, leaving him primarily raised by his mother, who, as he would later reveal in his 2007 biography, had physically and mentally abused him. Chevy grew up to be a rather unstable kid after being kicked out of school a few times before graduating from Stockbridge School.

He attended Haverford College during which his comic side became very apparent. Originally aspiring to study medicine, Chase, known for his genius comedy, changed his interest to acting. A talented drummer and piano player, Chase was part of two short-lived bands. He will then go to Bard College, where he will graduate in English.

While waiting for his comedy career to begin, Chevy Chase held a series of odd jobs, including taxi and truck driver, motorcycle driver, waiter and construction worker. He began his career as a writer for Smothers Brothers and National Lampoon. The latter would find great success in producing a string of successful Vacation films. Chase’s first performance was in the 1974 film Flute Tube. His performance won over Lorne Michaels who included him on the first season of Saturday Night Live as a writer, and the rest is history.

Chase’s wife, Jayni, was on the crew of the 1983 National Lampoon’s Vacation as location secretary. She was born Jayni Ann Luke on August 24, 1957 in Los Angeles, California. An environmentalist like her husband, Jayni is the founder of the Center for Environmental Education.

After his alcohol abuse which saw him be diagnosed with alcoholic cardiomyopathy. Reports surfaced that his wife was threatening to leave him. However, he cleaned up his act and the duo have since remained married.

If Jayni had the Chase divorce, it wouldn’t have been her first failed marriage as the comedic actor had already been through two divorces. His first marriage to Susan Hewitt ended in divorce after just three years in February 1976, while his second marriage to Jacqueline Carlin only lasted four years, from December 1976 to November 1980. Neither of his previous two marriages had children.
