Mitchell was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England on July 14, 1974. He was born to former hotel managers, Ian Douglas Mitchell and Kathryn Gray Hughes Mitchell, and he has two siblings, both boys, one of whom is one is Daniel.
David attended Abingdon School in Oxfordshire where he began to identify with comic characters. There, too, he began writing comedy material and did comedy sketches with his friends. After the birth of his younger brother, Daniel, his family moved to Oxford, where his parents found employment at Oxford Polytechnic, now Oxford Brookes University, while he attended an independent preparatory school in New College, the city. But before he enrolled at university, David worked as a proofreader for Oxford University Press.

David Mitchell joined Peterhouse College, Cambridge in 1993 to study history. There he met Robert Webb and together they recorded their first show Millions Innocents Dead or Dying: An Ironic Look at the Post-Apocalyptic Age in January 1995.
David was also the chairman of the CambridgeFootlight drama club from 1995 to 1996. His acting career officially started after his performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with his friend Webb. They were then hired to do comedy sketches for two famous famous comedians, Ben Miller and Alexander Armstrong, as well as for the British comedy sketch show, Big Train which aired from 1998 to 2002.
David’s first TV appearance was in 2000, when he co-wrote and starred in the short-lived BBC sketch show Slugger, starring Webb. The following year, the two began an exhibit of sketches of their own titled The Mitchell and Webb Situation. The show, which was well received by audiences, ran for six episodes on the now defunct Play UK channel. Their next show was the Peep Showreleased in 2003, in which they co-starred as Roommates. The show actually gave their stardom a major boost. It won the 2004 Golden Rose Award, Best Situation in 2008, BAFTA, and two British Comedy Awards for Best Television Comedy (2006 and 2007). It is also Channel 4’s longest running sitcom.
The pair also appeared in their first movie Magicians which was released in 2007. They also co-wrote their first book, This Mitchell and Webb Book, released in 2009. Individually, David Mitchell appeared in Radio sitcom Think the Unthinkable ; BBC2 sitcom Doctors and Nurses, Tame the Shrew, Goof and Jam and Jerusalem. He also narrated the UK version of Beauty and the Geek and did a track of himself called Listen Mitchell. His appearances from 2013 include Best of Worst, Would I Lie to You? and The Big Fat Quiz of the Year,among others. In 2014, he was among the signatories of Guardia. Today, his net worth is estimated at $58 million.

After getting married in November 2012, David automatically became brother-in-law to Giles Coren and Alexander Armstrong, both renowned writers and actors. They now have a daughter, Barbara Elizabeth June Mitchell, born May 22, 2015.
