Candice Patricia Bergen was born on May 9, 1946, in Beverly Hills, California, to Frances Bergen and Edgar Bergen. Her mother was a professional model and her father was a popular ventriloquist, comedian and actor. Growing up, she was introduced as “Charlie McCarthy’s little sister”, they referred to her father’s famous wooden dummy. Candice has an older brother named Kris Bergen and she started making appearances on her dad’s radio show early on.

She attended the University of Pennsylvania, but could not attend due to her interest in showbiz; she was expelled in her second year after failing two art and opera classes. While still in college, she was voted homecoming queen and Miss University.

Before getting into acting, she worked as a model and featured on the covers of Vogue. Candice made her debut in a 1966 film directed by Sidney Lumet as a college student. She also landed a role in another film The Sandcastle the same year, she was cast alongside Steve McQueen and Richard Attenborough and the film was nominated for an Oscar.

She was single for years after her death. Her husband, however, found love again with a real estate developer and philanthropist, Marshall Rose, at the age of 54. The two walked down the aisle in June 2000. They are still married to this day.
