Jidenna is a Nigerian and American hip-hop artist, songwriter and music producer. In 2015, he shot into the limelight with the release of the hit single “Classic Man” which ultimately earned him his first Grammy nomination. He has a long-standing working relationship with Janelle Monáe, which has resulted in several stellar collaborations, including the 2015 viral hit song, Yoga, and a thrilling theatrical performance at the 2015 BET Awards. In 2017, Jidenna released his debut studio album The Chef on Wondaland Records, Monáe’s music label.
Bio – What does Jidenna mean?
This multi-talented star was born JidennaTheodore Mobisson on May 4, 1985 in Wisconsin Rapids to a Caucasian mother and an African father. Her first name, “Jidenna”, comes from her father’s Igbo ethnic group, originally from southeastern Nigeria, and literally means “guard the father”. Jidenna spent part of her early childhood in her father’s native country. However, his family was forced to return to the United States in the early 1990s after being the victim of an attempted kidnapping. Upon their return to the United States, the family lived in different areas of Massachusetts, including Norwood and Milton.
Jidenna had a high school education at MiltonAcademy and there he formed a rap group Black Spadez. The young talent had his first songwriting and music production experience with the group. Before graduating in 2003, they released a self-titled debut album. Spadez Black. He originally enrolled to study sound engineering at Sanford University, however, his interest was later swayed and he eventually majored in “ritual arts”. After graduating from college, he got a full-time teaching job while pursuing his music career. Jidenna quickly got to work on his music after he landed the contract and in January 2015 he dropped his first official single, Classic Man, in collaboration with his label mate, Roman GianArthur. The song was a monster hit, as it received massive release in the United States and other countries around the world. Classic Man is on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts at No. 49 and later reached the peak position of No. 22. He was also nominated for Best Rap/Song Collaboration at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.
In addition to Classic Man, Jidenna worked on several other songs with fellow labelmates Wondaland Records, which eventually resulted in an EP titled L’Eéphus, released in August 2015. In 2015, Jidenna received high praise at the Soul Train Music Awards, including Best New Artist. After launching her musical career with flying colors, Jidenna resumed work on her debut studio album.
