Joe Rogan was born Joseph James Rogan on August 11, 1967, in Newark, New Jersey. When he was 5 years old, his parents divorced. Two years later, when he was 7, his family moved to San Francisco, California and then to Gainesville, Florida.
Rogan spent much of his teenage years in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts, where he attended Newton South High School. He developed a passion for martial arts at an early age, and in high school he began competing in karate taekwondo and kickboxing. Rogan wanted to become a pro in the martial arts but his dreams were truncated by several injuries, including chronic headaches.
After his martial arts dreams failed, Rogan, spurred on by friends, decided to pursue a career in comedy.
“I had no direction before I became a comedian. I was pretty worried about my future. I couldn’t imagine myself in a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. job,” Rogan said of his career.
As a future comedian, Rogan bolstered his income by working in construction, delivering newspapers, and a few other menial jobs. However, his knowledge of martial arts did not escape him when he began teaching students at Boston University.
In search of greener comedians, Rogan moved to New York in 1990, then to Los Angeles in 1994. He had a big break as a comedian in 1995 as a regular cast member of the NBC sitcom NewsRadio.
