Biography of Linus Sebastian
Linus Gabriel Sebastian was born on the 20th day of August 1986 in Vancouver (coastal port city of British Columbia), Canada. He has six siblings and a half-brother. He is known for his works on some Youtube channels including Channel Super Fun, Linus Tech Tips and Techquickie. These channels were created by him and they have more than 8 million subscribers. Between 2007 and 2015, Linus frequently worked for Canadian IT retailer NCIX on technology videos.
As a child, Linus had always been fascinated by technology. After graduating from Garibaldi High School, he enrolled at the University of British Columbia. However, he dropped out a few years later, mostly because he spent most of his time “tinkering around with his computer, hanging out on hardware forums, and playing video games.”
He was still a student when he got a part-time job working weekends for NCIX. He was then hired as a full-time employee in the sales department. It quickly became the company’s top seller of high-end gaming systems in just a few months. After seeing this progress, the president of the company quickly offered him a new position at headquarters where he was responsible for managing the system configurations on the company’s website.
Sebastian was indeed a hard worker as he was very important in helping NCIX become the number one water cooling parts seller in Canada. This prompted him to seize the opportunity to manage critical business components such as SSDs, RAM, motherboards and networks. A few years later, thanks to his impressive performance, Sebastian was promoted to category manager.
Youtube channel and hosting
In 2007, NCIX asked him to host their technology channel. This channel was basically created to showcase product offerings to track the company’s rivals such as “Newegg” and “TigerDirect”. On July 24 of the same year, Linus released his first video. It was done with the help of an editor and an anonymous cameraman after borrowing a camera from the son of the company’s president.
The initial response to the video was quite discouraging however, a different channel, ‘LinusTechTips’, was created on November 24, 2008 by Sebastian. This was done in an effort to keep the cost of video production low while decoupling it from the business so as not to be seen as a company producing substandard content.
In early 2012, Sebastian created another channel called “Techquickie” with the help of Luke Lafreniere (aka SlickPC) whom he met while working in NCIX. The channel’s goal was to provide information about the latest cool tech in minutes. However, in January 2013, Sebastian and Luke left the company to go start another business. They were joined by Brandon Lee and Edzel Yago, with whom they founded “Linus Media Group” in a garage.
A new channel called “Channel Super Fun” was created in May 2014. Sebastian and his partner Lafreniere used “Twitch” to live stream the show which is usually based on discussions regarding the latest tech news as well as Q&A . The show had aired a total of 184 episodes as of June 2017. There are a few other projects Sabastine and company have been working on. Some of the notables include; “Whole Room Water Cooling” (2014-2015), “Scrapyard Wars” (2015 to present), “7 Gamers 1 CPU” (2015-2016) and “8/10 Gamers, 1 CPU” (2016).
When interviewed by “Lifehacker.com,” Sebastian’s work ethic was summed up in his own words, “Execution is everything. Sitting down and planning is useless unless it becomes something tangible. You better execute 100% of a 50% plan rather than 50% of a 100% plan. Nothing drives me crazier than sitting pontificate on the “ideal way to do something” when we are in a rush, which is always the case if you want to accomplish something. “
