The success of his ultra-hit 2017 single Despacito changed all that. The song did more than bring him international success. He also put Puerto Rico on the map musically. At last count in July 2018, the song has garnered four Grammy Awards.

Luis Fonsi, Biography, Age

Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero is the first child of his parents Alfonso Rodríguez and Delia López-Cepero. He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 15, 1978. His parents also have two other children, two daughters Jean and Tatiana.

Fonsi has always had his thoughts for music. As a child, he tried to adapt his singing so that it could sound like the popular Puerto Rican singing group Menudo. During this period of his life he was also an active member of the San Juan Children’s Choir.

For his high school education, Luis moved to Florida where he enrolled at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando. He met a few friends there, including singer Joey Fatone, and together they formed a popular singing group known as the “Big Guys.”

Graduating from high school, he was admitted to Florida State University on a full scholarship to pursue studies in vocal performance. Again Luis was involved in singing groups. He has performed with the University Choir and with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Despite the scholarship race, he then dropped out of school to start his musical career. Shortly after he left school, Universal Music Latin offered him his first music contract.

Luis Fonsi’s first album was a success. In 1998 he published his first project Comenzaré, which translates to “I’m going to start”. It was a massive hit in Latin America, Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and other Spanish-speaking markets. It has also charted on various Latin music charts, including Billboard ‘s Top Latin Albums chart.

His next album in 2000 was even more successful. By then he had achieved celebrity status in the Spanish music market, even including a song by Christina Aguilera.

In 2002 Luis Fonsi released his first English album Fighting Sentiment. He featured his high school friend Joey Fatone in the music video for the track “Secrets.” Her fifth album Abrazar la Vida peaked at number one on the Latin Charts Billboard . During this period, he collaborated with Emma Bunton, the former Spice Girl, on her 2004 album.

Fonsi’s next two albums, Paso a Paso and Nada Es Para Siempre topped the charts, the latter earning a Latin Grammy Award nomination. Luis’ single “No Me Doy por Vencido” from his 2008 album Palabras del Silencio saw its US Billboard Hot 100 debut, peaking at No. 92. The single eventually tagged Billboard Latin Pop Song of the decade.

The following year, Fonsi won his first Latin Grammy Award for Song of the Year thanks to his single “Aquí Estoy Yo”. In July 2011, he was named leader of the new generation of Latin music by Billboard.

Three years after his 2014 album, the veteran Latin singer has released his most successful musical effort to date. Despacito ‘s January 2017 release with Daddy Yankee broke the mold of Latin music and filming for the stars. In the first week of April 2018, the song’s music video garnered 5 billion views on YouTube, becoming the most viewed video in the world. It also reached the top spot of almost all Latin Chart Billboard. Luis Fonsi then did an English remix of the single with Justin Bieber, which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for 16 consecutive weeks.

In May 2018, Despactio TV released a response to the success of the single titled Despacito II. The single featured Sans Undertale, Charlie Puth, and rapper Soulja Boy. Following the success of the single, the Puerto Rican singer collaborated with other artists, including Demi Lovato, Aitana and Stefflon Don.

Luis Fonsi began his acting career side by side with his music since 1992. He debuted in a brief appearance as a friend of the main character in the romantic film. Como Agua Para Chocolate. Twelve years later he was on Corazones al lite, playing the character of Roy in the Mexican telenovela. He also appeared on the Nickelodeon series Taina in 2001 and was part of a two-week tour with the Broadway cast, Tango Forever in August 2013.
