How it started
Mac Miller, birth name Malcolm James McCormick was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 19, 1992. Mac was raised Jewish, the religion of his mother. Her Christian father, Mark McCormick, is an architect and her mother, Karen Meyers, a photographer.
Malcolm went to Winchester Thurston School and later Taylor Allderdice High School. He was a very active student, who played all sports and regularly participated in high school parties.
Miller’s first love of music was singing, not rapping. A self-taught musician, he learned to play drums, piano, bass and guitar. However, once he fell in love with hip-hop, there was no going back.

Mac Miller signed to Rostrum Records, a well-known independent label, in 2010. He had come to the attention of the label’s president, Benjy Grinberg, while working on his film. KIDS mixtape. At the time, he was attracting the attention of other record labels but decided to leave with Grinberg. His two main reasons were that Rostrum operated in his hometown and had ties to big bands like Wiz Khalifa.
The mixtape that won him his record deal was released under Rostrum in August 2010. Later in 2010, during his first tour, he sold out all the records. The tour was labeled the Incredibly Dope Tour. Miller closed out the year with two hip-hop awards from Pittsburgh.
In March 2011, Mac released their fifth project, Best Day Ever. The mixtape featured hit songs like Donald Trump and Around the World. Production was handled by Chuck Inglish of The Cool Kids and 9th Wonder. The same month, he released a six-track EP titled Over and Beyond and later another mixtape titled J’aime la vie, merci. This project involved actors such as Bun B and Talib Kweli.
The rest of 2011 will see him perform on the remix of Maroon 5’s song, Move Like Jagger and his debut album, Blue Slide Park. Blue Slide Park debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, recording 144,000 sales in its first week. He was also included in the XXL Magazine Freshmen 2011 compilation.
Mac’s seventh mixtape arrived on March 23, 2012, titled Macadelic. He subsequently released several singles and music videos throughout the year and collaborated with names such as Pharell Williams and rapper Schoolboy Q.
In November 2012, Miller released his first alter-ego project, a jazz EP titled You, exclusively available on iTunes. Here, there was no hitting, but Miller exercised his vocal dexterity on extended jazz instrumentals. The project was released as Larry Lovestein and the Velvet Awakening
In 2013, Miller released his second album, Watching Movies With The Sound Off, a project he described as showing his vulnerability and introspection. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and moved 101,000 units in its first week. He also released an instrument-only mixtape, Running Phrases, under his production alias, Larry Fisherman. On February 26, 2013, he premiered his first reality series. It ran for six episodes on MTV2 and was titled Mac Miller and the Dope Family.
Miller’s production portfolio includes his own mixtape, his own mixtape, Delirious Thomas, and Vince Staple’s project, Stolen Youths.
The Pittsburgh presenter left Rostrum Records in 2014. He signed a recording and distribution deal with Warner Bros. Music for his record label, Souvenir Musique, which he launched in 2013. In 2012, during the early years of his fame, he got addicted to ‘purple bu’, the street name for a mixture of promethazine and codeine. He used it to cope with the pressure and demands of the industry and career. Eventually, he weaned off it in November 2012 before starting work on his reality TV show.
He was also sued individually for copyright infringement of two of his mixtapes. He was arrested along with some of his friends for possession of marijuana in 2011 while on tour. However, they were released the following day.
