Gladwell was born on September 3, 1963 in Fareham, Hampshire, England. His full name at birth is Malcolm Timothy Gladwell. He was born to a pair of accomplished individuals. Her mother, Joyce Gladwell, is a Jamaican psychotherapist and her father, a mathematics teacher, Graham Gladwell, from Kent, England.

The family lived in rural Canada and by the time he was six years old, the family moved from Southampton to Elmira, Ontario, Canada. When Gladwell was in high school, he was a middle-distance runner and even won the 14-year-old men’s 1500 meter title at the 1978 Ontario High School Championships in Kingston, Ontario. He won the championship with a time of 4:05:20.

Gladwell attended the University of Toronto, Trinity College, Toronto and graduated with a degree in history in 1984. He had also interned at the National Journalism Center in Washington, DC in 1982 as well.

He struggled to get accepted at any advertising agency he applied for after deciding to go into advertising. He later accepted a job with The American Spectator newspaper as a reporter, before settling in Indiana.

From 1987 to 1996, Gladwell worked at the Washington Post, covering science and business for the publication. After finishing his tenure with the capital-based publication, he started at The New Yorker where he said he wanted to “harness current academic research for ideas, theories, guidance or inspiration” .

The articles “The Tipping Point” and “’The ‘Coolhunt”, written by Gladwell in 1996 for The New Yorker, brought him some popularity. His recent escapades have seen him co-create the Next Big Idea Club with Susan Cain, Daniel Pink and Adam Grant. He still writes for the New Yorker.

In addition to his activity as a journalist, he is also a well-known and published author with at least five books. His first book, The Tipping Point, was published in 2000 and was inspired by the sudden drop in crime in New York. He had written an article of the same name in 1996. His work even had a certain impact on some of the policies of the NYPD.

After The Tipping Point, the next book to be written by Gladwell was Blink. It was released in 2005. It was an international bestseller with over 2 million copies sold. His third book was The Outliers, published in 2008 and then What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures was published on October 20, 2009. It was a book that contained a compilation of his favorite articles from when he worked for The New Yorker.

Most of the stories in it had different viewpoints. His book David and Goliath, released in October 2013, focuses on the standoff between the underdogs and the favorites.
