Matthew Slater was born Matthew Wilson Slater to NFL retiree Annie and Jackie Slater on September 9, 1985 in Long Beach, California. Thanks to his father’s success in sports, Slater from an early age wanted to play football at a professional level.
As a high school student at Servite High School in Anaheim, California, Slater was an outstanding football player and track star. He recorded 23 catches for 333 yards, 2 touchdowns in his junior year and 39 catches for 707 yards and 5 rushing yards as a senior to earn a Prep Star All-West selection. On the track, Slater set and still holds school records in the 100-meter and 200-meter events. He was later named Orange County Register Male Athletics of the Year Athlete of the Year.
After graduating, he accepted a scholarship to attend the University of California, Los Angeles where he majored in political science and history and played for the school’s football team. Slater Redshirt his freshman year and when he returned he was used as a reserve wide receiver. By his first year, he had become a return specialist, recording a total of nine tackles. As a high schooler, he made 25 tackles to tie the Pac-10 season record set in 1974 and finished the season with a first-team selection in the All-Pac 10 program as a player making a reminder.
