What is Dogecoin?
Dogecoin was founded in late 2013 by software engineers Billy Marcus and Jackson Palmer. Palmer created the cryptocurrency’s logo by mistyping the term “doge” to describe a Shiba Inu dog, which was trendy at the time.
Dogecoin achieved cult status in early 2021 on Reddit’s WallStreetBets message board—the primary mover behind the GameStop affair in January—where devotees swore to boost its value “to the moon” (that was before all discussion of crypto was banned on the subreddit).
Today, Dogecoin is no joke anymore, having skyrocketed in value and increased by more than 5,000 % in 2021. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, is one among its supporters, calling Dogecoin his favorite cryptocurrency. Musk also referred to Dogecoin as the “people’s crypto” and promised to put a physical Dogecoin token on the moon.
