Paloma Faith was born on July 21, 1981 as Paloma Faith Blomfield to an English mother and a Spanish father in Hackney, London.
Her parents divorced when she was four years old and because of this she was raised by her mother who moved to Stoke Newington, London. Growing up, Faith began to take an interest in dancing and was encouraged by her mother to take weekly ballet lessons.
After completing her secondary education at City and Islington College, Faith took her love of dancing to a whole new level as she studied for a BA in Contemporary Dance at the University of Leeds. While pursuing her studies, Faith worked as a hip-hop dancer in a few nightclubs to perfect her art.
Upon completion of her bachelor’s degree, she moved on to pursue a master’s degree in drama and theater at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Once she worked as a bartender in a pub, the manager offered her to become the lead singer of his band. The group was called “Paloma and the Penetrators”. She was very good at imitating famous soul and jazz singers such as Etta James and Billie Holiday, whom she cites as her influences.
It was during one of her many performances with the band that she started meeting various music industry executives and managers, which led to her big break. In the meantime, she had refused to join Amy Winehouse’s group.
Jamie Binns and Christian Wahlberg of Lateral’s management watched her perform once and immediately became hooked. They became his managers in 2007, helping him land a duet with singer Josh Weller called “It’s Christmas (And I Hate You)”. This earned him enough recognition to release his first solo single, Sober Cold Stone which went to number 17 on the UK singles chart. Her second single, New York, reached number 15 on the same chart.
Faith had, before her debut in music, started her acting career by landing a role in the 2007 film: St. Trinian’s. She had also appeared in an episode of the BBC police crime series HolbyBlue and was cast in the film. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus in 2009.
She has been nominated for a BRIT award twice. Once for ‘Best Female Solo Artist’ in 2012, then again for ‘Best Female Artist’ and ‘Best British Album’ in 2013.
