Rick Ross may no longer be the shiny newcomer but he certainly still has a lot to offer. In his heyday, his name was the name of every rap fan around the world.

Ross has been in the game for a long time – since the year 2000. The founder of the Maybach Music Group has released numerous projects and garnered enough awards to make any budding entertainer feel jealous, deflated or motivated.

Ross whose real name is William Leonard RobertsII is a boy from Mississippi. He was born in Clarksdale on January 28, 1976. However, his family would move to Carol City, Florida where he was raised. Ross’ high school education was taken at Miami Carol City High School. He was athletic at the time and played football for his school. This earned him a football scholarship to Albany State University, a historically black university.

His post-education days began with the position of corrections officer. This position lasted from December 1995 until his departure in June 1997.

Music was the next step for William and it started under Suave House Records. At the time, his stage name was Tefla Da Don and he lent his talent to Eric Sermon’s game. Def Squad presents Erick Onasis song, “ Ain’chhhh to chat”.

Then, in the mid-2000s, he would change his pseudonym, taking inspiration from the name of a former drug lord “Freeway” Rick Ross. He has no connection to the drug kingpin.

He soon joined and signed to Slip-n-Slide, a Def Jam Records label since 2006. He continued his career with feature films and touring, including with label mate, Trick Daddy.

He then released his first album under Slip-n-Slide. It was titled Port of Miami and debuted at the #1 spot on the Billboard 200. It sold 187,000 units in its first week. It is the second single Push was the theme song for the gangster film Scarface. The same year, he also directed two feature films on DJ Khaled’s debut album Listennn…the AlbumPort of Miami was also certified Gold by the RIAA on November 8, 2006.
