He was on the debate team at his top school and acted in plays. During this time in high school, he became editor of his school newspaper. Besides that, he created a daily news program with a friend. After high school, Ryan earned a degree in journalism and anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania.
At age 19, while still in college, he pioneered the Paranormal Research Society. All the work he did there was valuable experience that he used for the TV show Paranormal State.
