Sarah Demarest Barthel was born on November 17, 1983 in Greenwich, New York. The American musician attended Champlain College, Vermont, where she studied visual arts. She, however, chose to drop out to focus on her music career.

After Sarah Barthel left school in 2007, she returned home where she met an old friend, Josh Carter. After his stint with the band Grand Habit in New York, Josh formed an experimental band which Sarah chose to join to help polish some of her early songs. The duo then made the decision to make things official; they named the group “Charlie Everywhere” and immediately began performing at concerts. Soon they started making records and eventually released several EPs under Sub-Bombin Records.

The duo then signed a recording contract with the British label Barely Breaking Even (BBE) on January 26, 2009 and soon after changed the band’s name from Charlie Everywhere to Phantogram. Around the middle of the same year, precisely in May, the new group dropped their first self-titled title EP, which was then followed by another EP – Courir des flics Later in the year. BBE later released their debut album titled Eyelid Films on September 15, 2009 in Europe while the US release was on February 9, 2010.

The album attracted positive reviews and also ended up landing at number seven on the US Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. Sarah Barthel and the band’s big break came from their single titled Falling in Love on their 2nd studio album, Voice. The hit song was certified gold in September 2017 by the RIAA. The album released in February 2014 debuted at number 3 in “Top Rock Albums” and number 11 in “Billboard 200”.

Singer’s Childhood and Family Life

Sarah Barthel was born to Claire Demarest and Bruce Barthel; Unfortunately, little is known about his parents’ lives, including their occupations. However, it is known that Sarah grew up alongside her only brother, a sister, Rebecca Claire Barthel. Sadly, in January 2016, Sarah’s sister committed suicide after a long battle with depression.
