Swae Lee is an American rapper who is best known for the half-platinum album of hip-hop group Rae Sremmurd. As a solo artist, Swae Lee managed an album while contributing to other artists’ recordings, including French Montana’s five-time platinum record, ‘Unforgettable’.
Biography (age, real name)
Swea Lee was born Khalif Malikibnsham Brown to a single mother named Bernadette Walker in Inglewood, California on June 5, 1995. Details regarding his father are unknown, other than the fact that he left his family shortly after the birth of Lee.
Due to her mother’s work in the United States Army, the family very often moved around the American states, living in Mississippi, Maryland and Texas. While at the Fort Hood Army Station in Texas, Swea Lee and his older brother/future Rae Sremmurd bandmate Slim Jxmmi began writing music and later taught themselves how to record songs with online software.
In college, their mother left the army and had to move again. This time it was in Mississippi where she had settled down with a new companion. The family settled in Tupelo, Mississippi, in the Ida Street Housing Projects, an area notorious for poverty and high crime rates.
After graduating from high school, Swae Lee turned his full attention to his craft, looking to music as a way out of poverty. He formed a hip-hop rap group with his brother and a friend named Jemiah Middlebrooks, calling themselves Dem Outta State Boyz.
Swae Lee revealed that he and his brother spent quite a few nights sleeping on the streets before enjoying their big break. This is because their mother kicked them out so they could skip school and come home very late.
The boys released their first track titled “Party Animal” which earned them local celebrity status. It also opened the door for them to perform at local clubs and shows as a grand opening, while gathering a huge following online.
After failing to catch the eye of major music executives, the two brothers decided to move to Atlanta, a move that turned out to be the best thing for their music careers.
In Atlanta, the brothers met famed hip-hop producer Mike Will Made It who was impressed with their work and offered them a record deal. They connected to Ear Drummers Entertainment under the nickname Rea Sremmurd, which is spelled on the back as Ear Drummers.
The duo started churning out tons of songs, eventually releasing the hit single “No Flex Zone” in 2014. The song immediately topped the charts, giving way to even better success for their second single “No Flex Zone”. Type”, which debuted at number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 list. Their debut studio album was finally released in 2015 to critical and commercial acclaim. In total, the duo released three studio albums; SremmLife, SremmLife 2, and SR3MM have sold millions of records along the way.
As a solo artist, Swae Lee has been featured on a number of other artists’ records and has produced a number of them.
