The name Diplo doesn’t immediately ring the average music lover, but the disc jockey is behind the beat of some of your favorite songs. The record producer has produced the songs of many major music stars, from Beyonce to Justin Bieber, including Gwen Stefani, Madonna, Britney Spears and most notably MIA, to whom we must put him in the spotlight.

Diplo is the lead member of the electronic dancehall music project Major Lazer. He is also part of the electronic duo Jack Ü alongside fellow DJ, Skrillex. Along with Sia and Labrinth, Diplo belongs to the supergroup, LSD. He produces under his label, Mad Decent. Here’s everything you need to know about the two-time Grammy Award winner.

Who is Diplo? (Age)

On November 10, 1978, the DJ was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Barbara Jean (née Cox) and Thomas Pentz. His name was Thomas Wesley Pentz Jr. However, it was his fascination with dinosaurs belonging to the genus Diplodocus that would qualify him for Diplo. Pentz has German and English roots.

Diplo started DJing as a young boy living in Miami. He attended the University of Central Florida and later Temple University in Philadelphia, where he began to gain fame as a DJ. He soon teamed up with DJ Low Budget and they began performing together under the moniker Hooked on Hollertronix.

Performing at parties, the two quickly grew in popularity and soon released mixtapes that caught the attention of The New York Times which ranked it among the top 10 albums of 2003. Diplo quickly caught the attention of artists of all genres and created a studio, The Mausoleum in Philadelphia. Working with MIA in 2004 really helped Diplo rise to prominence as his track “Paper Planes,” which reached No. 4 on the Hot 100, was nominated for a Grammy Award.

In 2006, he founded the label Mad Decent in Los Angeles and has remained relevant over the years.

Net value

Diplo is one of the richest nightclub jockeys in the world. Ever since Forbes started tracking the wealth of the world’s biggest DJs, it’s made a list time and time again. In 2016, he earned $23 million, making him the 6th highest paid DJ in the world. He held the spot in 2017 when he raked in a higher $28.5 million.

Diplo derives much of his fortune from touring, however, he has been able to diversify his sources in recent years. The DJ invests in Matchabar and benefits from a handful of endorsement partners, including Barcadi. He also branched out into the TV business and is the producer of “What Would Diplo Do?”, a Viceland TV series. Forbes put his 2018 earnings at $20 million, making him the 7th richest of the year. Diplo’s net worth is estimated at $26 million.

Baby mom, wife, son

Thomas Pentz had the privilege of romance among music’s biggest stars, but none of them were married. However, one woman who is often seen as Diplo’s wife is his ex-girlfriend and baby mum, Kathryn Lockhart. The two had been in an on-and-off relationship for years and were even labeled as a knowingly estranged pair.

They started their relationship in 2009 about a year after Diplo broke up with MIA. They would go on and off until he stopped dating in 2014. At the time they started dating in 2009, Kathryn Lockhart was working as a bartender.

About a year into her relationship, in 2010, she gave birth to their first son, Lockett. Diplo would later reveal to the media that his intention was not to have a baby, but when he found out she was pregnant, he couldn’t have wished for a better person to make babies with. After Lockett arrived, Lockhart had no more work to do to become a full-time mother. The couple moved in together, but their relationship didn’t last beyond 2014.

Back when Diplo was flirting with pop singer Katy Perry learned that Lockhart was pregnant with what would become Diplo’s second son. Lockhart gave birth to Lazer Lee Louis Pentz in 2014. Diplo would briefly continue with Perry. Lockhart now has a children’s party planning business. The DJ called the boys in as a date at the 2017 Grammy Awards and they put on a show.
